Services will be held privately by the family for Mary S. Cameron, 89, who died March 16 surrounded by her family at the Mertens House in Woodstock.
Mary was born on March 4, 1927 in Woodstock, daughter of George W. and Beatrice May (Pretty) Staples.
Mary graduated from Woodstock High School in 1945 and married Wendell A. Cameron on August 20, 1945, Mr. Cameron predeceased her.
Mary attended the National College of Chiropractors in Chicago, Illinois. After returning to Woodstock she worked at the White Cupboard Inn and the Woodstock Inn for a few years. Mary was also a co-owner of the White Cottage and Cameron’s Casuals both in Woodstock. Mary spent 30 years working for the Vermont National Bank in Woodstock, retiring as an assistant manager.
Mary volunteered and was a board member of many local organizations including the Woodstock Alumni Association, the Homestead, the Mertens House, the Kings Daughters, and the Edwin Thompson Senior Center.
In 2008 Mary was named Woodstock Rotary’s Citizen of the Year. She enjoyed bowling, sewing, knitting, and working in her flower gardens.
She is survived by two daughters; Joann Cameron of Woodstock, and Wendy Atterholt of Prescott, Arizona; a son Jon Cameron of South Woodstock; five grandchildren; Jennifer, Joel, Jaima, Molly Jo, and Nick; four great-grandchildren; Justin, Elisha, Rhoades, and Luke; one great-great-granddaughter Nora; one brother Ted Staples of Pomfret; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Mary was predeceased by her husband Wendell; and three brothers; George Jr., Edgar J. and Dick Staples.
Memorial donations may be made to the Thompson Senior Center, 99 Senior Lane, Woodstock, 05091.
