Richard Robbins Obituary, 74

CAVENDISH — There will be a memorial gathering this summer, with a date to be determined, for Richard (Dick) Robbins, who passed away on March 15, surrounded by his family and dear friends at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Hanover, N.H., from complications of emphysema. Burial will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Hartford, Conn. at a later date.
He was born Sept. 8, 1939, in Bristol, Conn., and was the only child of Margaret (Robertson) Robbins and Pliny E.W. Robbins.
He graduated from Bristol High School in 1959, and attended Connecticut State College.
He worked for a time at Wallace Barnes Associated Spring in Bristol, Conn.
On Sept. 14, 1968, he married the love of his life, Judith (Rusty) Plocke in Old Saybrook, Conn.
In 1971, Richard realized his boyhood dream of becoming a firefighter when he was appointed to the Bristol Fire Department, where he worked proudly until 1986, when he took an early retirement and later moved his family to Vermont.
Richard adored animals and they adored him, which would account for the five dogs, two goats, chickens and a Morgan horse he so loved and left behind. He loved being a “backyard farmer.” But, more than anything else in the world, he loved and adored his family, and was a great, loving, kind and gentle husband, father, grandfather and gentleman who will be missed more than words can ever say.
Richard was a member of the Bristol (CT) Elks Club, and later transferred his membership to the Springfield (VT) Lodge, where he initiated the now annual coat drive and chaired the Veterans Committee, which was near and dear to his heart. How proud he was when the Springfield Elks #1506 won the Veterans Trophy for all the hard work he put into the Wounded Warriors Project. He was an Elk for more than 45 years. He was also a member of the Ludlow Rod and Gun Club.
He leaves behind his adoring wife, Rusty (Judy), of 45 years; one son, Scott and Scott’s husband, Eric Hynes of Norwood, Mass; two daughters, Heather Robbins of Killington, and Mackenzie Robbins of Bethel; and four beautiful grandchildren, Lyndsay Squier of Wallingford, Cale Squier of Killington, and his nine-month-old twin grandsons, Caleb Richard Robbins and Jacob Walter Robbins of Bethel. Richard always wanted twins, and he lived to see his “twins” born. He was so happy. He also leaves behind his dear friends, Judy and John Tewksbury of Madison, Conn.
Richard was predeceased by one son, Jeffrey Richard Robbins in March 1971.
Donations in Richard’s memory may be made to the Vermont Lung Association, 372 Hurricane Lane, Suite #101, Williston, 05495.
