PITTSFIELD — Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 28 at the Pittsfield Federated Church for Melvin Charles Colton, who passed away peacefully in The Garden Room at Gifford Hospital on Nov. 17. Burial will immediately follow in the Pittsfield Village Cemetery.
Our Dad, Gramp, and Great-Wompa was our family patriarch and a beloved member of the community of Pittsfield in which he lived for most of his 87 years.
Mel was born on May 29, 1928 in Pittsfield, in the very house and bedroom he lived in at the time of his death.
He attended Pittsfield Graded School and Whitcomb High School in Bethel, graduating in the class of 1946. Following graduation he worked as a logger with his father, Charlie Colton. In 1948, he joined the U.S. Army and served for three years.
When his hitch was up he married the love of his life, Barbara Quillia of Rochester, on Oct. 6, 1951 and they began their married life in Pittsfield where they raised their family and lived for the next 63 years.
Mel was the last founding member of the Pittsfield Fire Department and was a founding member of The Tweed Valley Travelers Snowmobile Club. At various times over the years he was on the School Board of the Pittsfield Graded School, a member and deacon at the Pittsfield Federated Church, member of the Historical Society, served as a Selectman and was Town Road Commissioner. He was currently serving on the Cemetery Committee.
But, as we all know, after his family Mel’s greatest passion was “yellow paint.” Although he also logged for many years, his business, Mel Colton Excavating, which he started in 1955, was his life. His customers became his friends and his pride was his work ethic and a job well done. One of his greatest joys was when his sons, Chuck and Dave, came to work with him in the business.
Mel always had a smile, a story and a cold beer for all who stopped at the house or garage after a day’s work. His friendly, outgoing personality endeared him to many. He and Barb loved the Valley that they called home and the friends and neighbors who lived there.
Mel is survived by one daughter, Lynne Colton Domina and husband, David, of Cambridge; two sons, Charles (Chuck) Colton and his wife, Stephanie; and David and his wife, Mona, all of Pittsfield; five grandchildren; Jeremy Domina of Seattle, Washington; Molly Domina of Cambridge; Hannah Colton and Tim Thody, of Cabot; Sarah McCullough and husband, Rupert of Royalton; U.S. Air Force SSGT Jonathan Colton; and two great-grandsons, Colton and Jackson McCullough; his older sister, Joyce Colton Vogt, of Visalia, California and his brother-in-law, Raymond Quillia, of Rochester.
He was predeceased by his wife, Barbara Quillia Colton in January of this year; his parents, Charles and Lena Colton; and his brother, Gary Colton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to Pittsfield Volunteer Fire and Rescue, PO Box 684 Pittsfield, 05762 or Gifford’s Last Mile Ride, 44 South Main Street Randolph, 05060. (Last Mile Ride supports the patients and families utilizing The Garden Room at Gifford.)

Gary Corliss Obituary, 72

EAST HAMPTON, Connecticut — A Funeral Liturgy was celebrated on Dec. 5 at St. Patrick Church East Hampton for Gary Lee Corliss, who died suddenly at his home on Lake Pocotopaug in East Hampton on Nov. 30. Burial will be in the family plot in Windsor.
Although he lived in Connecticut for the past 50 years, he still thought of himself as a Vermonter. He maintained ties with his hometown of Windsor, where he was born Aug. 14, 1943, the second son of the late Leslie and Hazel Corliss. Gary had one brother, Robert Corliss, who died earlier this year.
As a brand new University of Vermont graduate in 1954, Gary (FSA, MAAA, CSA) moved to Hartford to begin a lifelong career in the insurance industry. Aetna was his first professional home, where, in 1985 he championed the company’s entry into Long Term Care insurance, overseeing the development of individual Long Term Care insurance products that set industry standards and served as the impetus for subsequent NAIC Model Regulations. He subsequently served as President for Group Management Services, Duncanson and Holt Administration Services, AUL Long Term Care Solutions, and ERC LTC Solutions. In 2002 he founded Avon Long Term Care Leaders, through which he built the largest LTC reinsurance facility in the U.S. and globally. He was “mostly retired” for the past 10 years, although kept his hand in the industry as a mentor to previous colleagues, and as founding CEO of Avon Long Term Care Consultants, an underwriting business. Throughout his career, Gary authored numerous articles, and addressed public and private seminars on Long Term Care insurance throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Asia. For over 20 years, he chaired the Society of Actuaries Long-Term Care Experience Committee and the Long Term Care Intercompany Study that has published five of the largest (and only) public data sources on insured lives for longterm care insurance.
Gary followed the guidance of the Holy Spirit as he pledged to be of service in all areas of his life. He coached youth basketball, swimming, softball and soccer, leading the Girls 1988 Connecticut State Soccer Champions to victory. He served as a soccer referee in Avon, Conn. for many years, donating all his ref fees to charity. For three decades he made yearly trips to an Appalachian mission of The Sisters of St. Joseph, driving truckloads of clothing, toys and household goods. He was a catalyst in the Social Action Committee at the Church of St. Ann in Avon. He served on the Pro-life Committee at St. Patrick’s Church in East Hampton and devoted innumerable hours to the Knights of Columbus Belltown Council, where he was the Grand Knight for the past 18 months.
Gary was an avid swimmer who, for many years, made a practice of waterskiing once a year on his birthday. He enjoyed ballroom dancing with his wife for the past 14 years. Several years ago he began training for triathlons and running, taking first place in his age category in many of the races he entered. In September, he attained his long-term goal of completing a half-marathon, alongside his two proud daughters. He enjoyed frequent travel to all parts of the world, but was also happy chopping wood and tending to evening fires in the fireplace at home. He was a coupon clipper who took delight in reporting on how much he had saved during any given shopping trip. His “pasta with sauce,” was legendary.
Gary was a man devoted to his family. Carol, his wife of 18 years, will deeply miss being his partner in all the big and little things of life. His children Cindy (Corliss) Godwin, Greg Corliss, and Jaime Corliss are eternally grateful for his love, support, wise guidance, unbending optimism, goofy sense of fun, deep faith, and spirituality. His stepson Jim McDonnell cherishes the man who helped guide him through his teen years and early adulthood. His grandchildren, Ben and Ella, adored their “Pa” and will always hold him in their hearts.
Gary is also mourned by his first wife, Mary Corliss; his mother- and father-in-law, Velma and Ralph Bodensteiner; his daughters-in-law Beth Corliss and Ashley McDonnell; his son-in-law Kevin Godwin; many brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews; several cousins; and countless friends.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Sisters of St. Joseph of Chambery Development Office, 27 Park Road, West Hartford, CT 06119. To leave online condolences please visit www.spencerfuneralhomeinc.com.

Jeffrey Robinson

BRIDGEWATER — A celebration of life was held on Dec. 5 at the Unitarian-Universalist Chapel in Woodstock for Jeffrey Gordon Robinson, 55, who passed away on Dec. 1 at his home in Bridgewater, surrounded by his family and dearest friend Neal Lantz. After a long battle with cancer, Jeff made the decision to spend his last days at home surrounded by his loved ones. Gwen Groff, minister of the Bridgewater Mennonite Church, officiated.
He fought with strength and dignity and will be remembered as a great husband, father, son, and friend, a hardworking outdoorsman, and a role model to all.
Jeff was born on April 8, 1960 in Randolph, son of Ralph and Carolyn (Green) Robinson.
Jeff graduated from Woodstock Union High School in 1978 where he played football, basketball and lacrosse. Jeff went on to coach the sports he loved through the Woodstock Recreation Department, Woodstock Youth Hockey and the Woodstock Union Middle School. Coaching children brought so much joy into his life and he touched the lives of so many local children and families.
Jeff spent most of his life logging and enjoying the outdoors as an avid deer hunter and fisherman. He grew up hunting with both of his parents and even though he loved venison he mourned for the deer he shot. He enjoyed brook fishing and spent many seasons trying to catch up with his sister Lisa who often out fished him. Jeff loved the outdoors and worked hard to build a family camp on the Gold Coast Road in Bridgewater where he and his family would gather for the holidays.
Jeff was happiest at his children’s games and traveled many miles over the years to attend as many as he possibly could. He would refer to the children he coaches as “my boys or my girls” as he watched them continue the sports that he coached them in through high school and college. He took great pride when he saw they continued to use the skills that he helped develop.
Jeff is survived by his wife Beth (Triller) Robinson of Bridgewater; three children; Joshua, Aria and Daniel, his parents Ralph and Carolyn Robinson of Woodstock; his sister Lisa (Robinson) Bellimer and her husband Audie of Bridgewater, and their children Cody Bellimer of Cary, North Carolina and Callie Bellimer of Portland, Maine; three aunts, Sondra Stevens and her husband Edward of Mendon, Sue and her husband Larry Trottier of South Royalton, and Judy and her husband Fred Sorentino of Mt. Morris, New York; his uncle Greg Robinson and his wife Nancy of Bridgewater; as well as his many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Memorial contributions may be made to a scholarship that is being established through the Woodstock Recreation Department to assist families in need with team dues and equipment needs for sports offered by the Recreation Department. A scholarship in Jeff’s name will be established by the WUHS Class of 1978 for a college bound graduating senior each year.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock. An online guest book can be found at cabotfh.com
