Charles Wise

KILLINGTON – A Celebration of Life will take place at the Sherburne United Church of Christ in Killington at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 15 for Charles A. Wise, 84, who died Nov. 2 at his home in Killington. A reception will follow at 4 p.m. at the Summit Lodge in Killington.
He was a longtime Vermont resident, community leader in Killington and Rutland, and devoted friend to many.
While Charlie was originally from New York City, he spent 53 years living in Vermont, drawn here by skiing, hiking and the state’s natural beauty.
He was born in 1931 and spent his growing-up years in Bayside, Queens.
He was a Korean War veteran with four years of active duty in the U.S. Air Force.
After meeting Joan, his wife-to-be, on the ski slopes, Charlie also fell in love with Vermont, and together they moved to the town of Sherburne (later named Killington) in 1962.
As a Killington resident, Charlie worked as a house builder, innkeeper, ski patrolman, volunteer fireman, and schoolteacher in West Rutland. He later pursued a long career as a realtor, founding Wise And Co. Real Estate in 1976.
The move to small-town Vermont propelled Charlie’s commitment to civic leadership and community service. Charlie helped to put in place much of the infrastructure of the town of Killington. He helped draft the first zoning bylaws that ensured preservation of natural habitats and hiking trails. He also served as town selectman, town meeting moderator (for over a decade), town planning commission chairman and chairman of the study and construction committee for the present Killington Elementary School.
Charlie’s commitment to community service extended far beyond his hometown. In Rutland, he was Rutland Regional Planning commissioner, chairman of the Rutland Regional Transportation Council and president of the Rutland County Board of Realtors, receiving Rutland County’s Realtor of the Year Award in 1989. In Woodstock, he became chairman of the Woodstock Union High School Board. On the state level, he served on the Executive Committee of the Vermont Association of Realtors and the Vermont Legislative Apportionment Board. On the national level, he was a delegate to the Countryside Exchange, a U.S. – U.K. initiative aimed at sharing successful stewardship techniques and broadening public support for countryside conservation. In 1997, he was awarded a certificate of merit by Governor Howard Dean for “tireless and outstanding volunteer service to the community.”
Charlie will also be remembered for his love of the great outdoors. He and his family had many adventures skiing, river rafting, hiking and camping. His vibrant, positive spirit, devotion to family and friends, and unquenchable sense of humor will continue to inspire all that knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Joan; his children, Christopher and Suzanne; and his sister, Eleanore Dunn.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Sherburne Memorial Library, 2998 River Road, Killington, 05751.

She was the matriarch of an extended family and welcomed into her family, Jon Farnham, Lynn Dodsworth, Richard Sweet and Clarence Harrington as well as many others over the years.
A lover of animals as well she was predeceased by Weehawk (mascot from Tip Top Tire) and Shehawk.
Extremely proud of her father and his accomplishments, she studied a wide array of subjects and shared her passion for knowledge with everyone she met. She was a lifelong student and excelled in gathering information on any topic, all without the use of technology. She studied at the University of New Hampshire, Sierra College, Goddard College, Community College of Vermont, Plymouth State College, where she received her Bachelors Degree; She also attended the MALS program at Dartmouth College, where her father taught at the medical school, This created her desire to donate her body to science.
She was proud of her children and grandchildren and made family her priority. She never gave up on anyone and often in the most dire of circumstances would inject humor to lighten the situation. She was selfless, caring and also helped anyone in whatever way she could. She also loved a good political conversation and was ready to move to Canada should Bernie not win.
Anyone who knew Ann knew of her love of both books and music and of her wish to share them. She sometimes bought more than one copy of a book to share with someone who might enjoy it, often attending book signings and getting to know the authors she enjoyed. Always one to play whether it was water fights in the house or playing with toys with the children in her life, she had a wonderful sense of humor often expressed by receiving or sending sometimes rude and insulting cards for any occasion, having spent hours at the Corner Drug Store picking the perfect card.
In lieu of flowers or donations, please read a book, share a book or read a book to someone special or someone who cannot read.
